Power Balls

Happy New Year! This week I am doing a healthy snack for everybody who is trying to keep their New Years resolution of getting healthier. The best way to do that is by going vegan of course, but even a non-vegan will enjoy these power balls.

Why I chose my ingredients for these power balls:

Flaxseed has Omega 3s which are the good kind! It is also good for clearing out excess hormones in your body. Flaxseed is also high in fiber which we can all use more of.

Make sure you are using real maple syrup because it is a natural sweetener not a refined sugar. Sure it does cost a little more but don’t let the price be the reason you get the fake stuff and flood your body with those processed sugars.

Hempseed seems to carry a stigma because people think it will make them fail a drug test or something but it is actually a superfood. Hempseed is a complete protein. It is packed with vitamins and nutrients and considered a “perfect” food. I use the Nutiva brand of raw shelled hempseed.

I decided to use plant protein powder in these power balls because people think they need so much of it. Most of us actually get too much protein in a day, but I will let you worry about that for yourself. You can omit the protein in this recipe or put less if you want. (Adjust the ratio of wet and dry ingredients as needed so the balls will stick together.) Normally I would use hemp protein powder (this is my go to stuff) if I was going to use any, but when I went to buy some the store was out so I am giving this Plant Fusion stuff a try.

Oats have both soluble and insoluble fiber so your blood glucose levels stay regular and you get your insides moving. Win-win situation.

The chocolate chips are in there for some texture and fun. I used Enjoy Life brand because they offer a range of diary free baking chips and they are sold more conveniently at regular grocery stores.

The Recipe:

PB-Oat Power Balls

Makes approximately 25 balls

  • 1/2 cup oats
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter (or other nut butter)
  • 1 tablespoon protein powder (see note above)
  • 1 tablespoon flaxseed
  • 2 tablespoons hempseed
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons dairy-free chocolate chips

For this recipe you only have to toss everything into a bowl and mix it up. Simple as that.

Once everything is mixed evenly roll your balls into about a heaping teaspoon full and place them on a plate or tray and toss them into the fridge to set up a little.

You can store them in the fridge or put them in the freezer for later.
