Get your smoothie on this week since you are probably still trying to stick to your New Year’s Resolution to be healthier. Even if you are not still trying, then maybe get back on the wagon and notice how much better you feel eating real food.
You will need a good blender for this recipe. I had a really old one from the 80s that I took from my mom during college and it was the best blender I had known until it just wasn’t anymore and it would barely even spin anymore. My mom spoiled me for my birthday last year and got me a Ninja blender and I can not recommend it enough. It will blend everything from nuts to ice and anything in between.
Greens Mix : Making a green smoothie can be an easy way to get in your greens without having to laboriously chew through all those leafy pieces in the form of a salad or something. Salad all the time is nobody’s idea of a good time, smoothies on the other hand are tasty. Pack in at least a cup worth of greens into your smoothie and your are on your way to a healthier day. My greens mix is made of spinach, arugula, and green radicchio. Fun fact (or maybe its just embarrassing) I have always thought radicchio was people mis pronouncing radish. Here I am though, admitting to the world that I had no idea what was going on with that stuff. Also I now know that radicchio is actually among a select group of vegetables that cuts breast cancer growth almost in half. I learned this while reading the “What The Health” Book and by now most everybody has heard of this documentary. (I am only a quarter of the way through the book so far and its very interesting. Nut Butter : I used peanut butter mainly because this is all I had, but really any nut butter will work here. Let your imagination run wild; almond, cashew, peanut, hazelnut, a nut-seed combo. Really whatever floats your boat will probably taste good here.
Frozen banana : I have had my mind blown over and over by banana since going vegan. I am one of those people who does not particularly enjoy eating banana alone because the texture is all kinds of weird for me. That being said I have been using banana is various recipes and it is like a whole different thing when its frozen. It adds creamy texture when blended up with other things frozen. Number one on that list is nice cream which is like frozen banana with whatever flavor other stuff and its delicious. That will be one of my upcoming posts because it is awesome. Anyway, I chose to add the banana to this smoothie for the above reason, creaminess.
Non-dairy milk : I typically use almond as my fiancee has a sensitivity to coconut but you can use whatever you want that is non-dairy. Your body will thank you for not having another species breast milk in your diet, just saying.
Matcha powder : You maybe have heard of this by now it is made from green tea leaves and it is good for all kinds of things like detoxifying your body, it is high in antioxidants, high in fiber, boosts your metabolism, and many other things. If you are a caffeine junkie like me then definitely add this because it is also high in caffeine! Yay caffeine!
Vanilla: I added a teaspoon to help sweeten the smoothie and make it not taste like only those leafy greens.
Here is the recipe for everybody who just skipped the post to get to the making part:
- 1 cup greens
- 1 cup non-dairy milk
- 1 tbsp chia seeds
- 3 tbsp nut butter
- 1 tsp matcha powder
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth.
