Fruit Leather? It’s Like a Fruit Roll Up
Making fruit leather ahead of time makes for a perfect snack for you or your kids. Homemade fruit leather is a great choice because you can make it as healthy as you want. If you prefer it sweet, then you can do that too.
This fruit leather is really easy to make, although it does require quite a bit of time in the oven to dry out. You may want to choose a day to make these when you do not need to rush off somewhere. The best part is you do not need a lot of ingredients to make it.
1 cup applesauce
1 1/2 cup chopped fruit
I used strawberries because that was what I had. You can use whatever fruit you have or want for these fruit leather snacks. If it is a more tart fruit, you can sweeten with agave. I did not need to sweeten my mixture because the strawberries were plenty sweet.
Preheat oven to 170.
Line a baking sheet with a silicone mat or parchment paper. I was baking this particular recipe while out of town and I really wish I had thought to bring my silicone baking mats because they would have made this so much easier. You can use one sheet of parchment paper unlike the picture shown above.
Make a puree with all your ingredients in a food processor.
Spread the puree onto a large baking sheet. You want the mixture to be fairly thin but not too thin or else it will turn brittle. You want it to be spread as evenly as possible so it will bake evenly.
Cook for at least 3 hours. You are looking for a texture that is not too soft so it can be rolled up if desired. The cook time will vary depending on how thick your mixture is. If it is mushy it is not done yet.
